Back at it with the performer of the Month posts! This Month it is Jimmy Awards Winner and Mean Girls star, Reneé Rapp
Reneé was the Queen Bee Regina George in Mean Girls on Broadway before the COVID-19 shut down at the end of March this year. Despite being the Iconic Regina George you’d be surprised to learn that Reneé is only 20 years old and that Mean Girls was her Broadway Debut(which she made when she was only 19 years old!). Reneé is fairly new to the musical theatre world as her first big experience was in The National High School Musical Theatre Awards, (Also known as the Jimmy Awards). After being nominated for The Blumey Awards (Charlottes Musical Theatre Awards) which she went on to win for her performance of Sandra in her schools’ production of Big Fish (Based on the 2003 film). Reneé then went on to attend the Jimmy Awards where she went onto win Best Performance by an Actress beating out 40 other competitors for that title.
It was announced in May 2019 that Reneé would take over the role of Regina for a limited run that June whilst the then-current Regina, Taylor Louderman took a short break from the show. Reneé started her permanent run in the role on September 10th 2019 and was in the role at the time of the Broadway closure.
Roles I would LOVE to see Reneé in are: Jenna in Waitress, Heather Chandler in Heathers and Sandra in Big Fish.
I first discovered Reneé through Mean Girls and have been amazed by her vocals ever since. Despite being the main plastic Reneé is anything but the Head B*tch Regina George is, Reneé is always tweeting inspirational tweets to help those who suffer anxiety. Her Instagram is dotted with amazing short covers. Reneé could honestly make the a alphabet sound incredible- she could sing any thing and it would sound amazing. She has the vocal type I could listen to for hours and hours on end. Reneé has been open about the fact that she is putting out her own music in the future which is going to be incredible and I cannot wait to hear what she releases! I’m also hoping that I get to hear her sing live at least once whether in MG or something else she has planned; I just wish that I could be able to meet her at stage door after a show so I can tell her how incredible she was.
On Friday 18th September, I had a very special Zoom Call with Reneé herself, (Via Broadway Bookers website) and it was one of the most amazing 45 minutes of my life. She was one of the sweetest humans- so easy to talk to as well! In the short clips below you can see our little quickfire session and some of the questions about Mean Girls that I asked her.
I really hope that I get the chance to see her perform and meet her at Stage Door one day. She is the sweetest person and has vocals to kill. I cannot wait to follow her career! You Can follow Reneé on Social Media at @reneemj on Instagram and @reneemjrapp on Twitter!
Reneé is a all around superstar and it is for that reason that she is my performer of the month.
